Our Background

In 2015, a group of 10 young, unemployed graduates, established IYDSF to give back to the community Prudhoe and the broader Ngqushwa local Municipality, in response to a lived understanding of the challenges facing children and youth in Nqgushwa municipality.

Together with past beneficiaries, we continue to change the game, can we count you in?

Mission Statement

Let’s build the world together

Can you imagine an environment where children and youth are safe, healthy, empowered, optimistic, self-reliant? Where they have access to quality education and health care? Where they can have fun together?

Today, our children and youth are growing up in an environment characterised by violent crime, poverty, substance abuse, high rates of teenage pregnancy and limited access to health. Where youth are the victims and perpetrators of crime. We can change this! Are you ready to be a game changer?

What we do

IYSDF is a youth-led organisation that uses the power of sport to educate, motivate, and inspire children and youth to overcome challenges, and live healthy and productive lives, whilst being game-changers in their communities. In addition, programs encourage community participation, contribute to crime prevention strategies, and promote rural safety.

How we do it

We use sports as a vehicle for learning and youth development for female and male youth. To facilitate holistic youth development we offer we incorporate life skills and work readiness into our programs.

Higher Education funding

One of the primary obstacles to rural youth progressing after completing secondary education, is having the financial resources to follow a higher education learning track. IYDSF, through partnership with the CATH SSETA, link beneficiaries to bursary opportunities.

Work Readiness

To prepare young people for the workplace, IYSDF have partnered with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and Harambe to offer graduates and school leavers  access to work readiness programmes and registration onto the employment seekers database.

Raising up Game Changer Champions

IYSDF, while addressing need for opportunities to further education, substance abuse, high levels of youth crime, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health, also focus on determinants of health such as education and employment, to ensure adolescents stay on positive path into adulthood. Game changer champions are programme participants who have been engaged in the programme for some time. They are mentored to support and act as role models to younger participants. A total of 30 game change champions are trained and mentored each year. Key game changer commitments: Engaging physical fitness, Avoiding drugs and alcoho, Employabilit, Community service

Permaculture – Inter-schools food garden competition

We encourage primary schools learners to participate in food gardening – providing for the nutrition needs of the school and surrounding communities. Each year, primary schools in Ngqushwa municipality are invited to participate in the IYDSF inter-schools food garden competition. Learners and educators are trained in permaculture and receive a starter kit for their food garden. These gardens are maintained by learners and parents.
